On Sunday, January 16, Gays Against Guns (GAG) will be joined by US Rep. Carolyn Maloney; Manuel and Patricia Oliver and others to demand that the United States Supreme Court let our state’s strict gun laws stand. The court will rule this year on New York State Rifle Association v. Bruen, the case in which the NRA-affiliated NYSRA seeks to overturn 108 years of New York State law. “New York State’s handgun concealed- carry licensing law should be held up as an example to the nation. It has saved thousands of lives. In this era of frequent mass shootings, this law is crucial in a densely populated tourist magnet like New York City,” says GAG’s Jay W. Walker. New York’s gun laws are a likely reason our city has not had a public mass shooting like the June 12, 2016, Pulse Nightclub mass murder in Orlando, FL that inspired GAG’s formation;, the October 1, 2017, mass murder in Las Vegas;, or the February 14, 2018, mass murder at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. All of those shooters were licensed and obtained their guns legally, despite numerous indicators that those mass murderers should not have been allowed to own guns. None of them would have been allowed to acquire those guns in New York. "The shooter of our beautiful son Joaquin "Guac" Oliver had easy access to an AR-15 with no other restrictions than a rudimentary background check. A system that allows criminals to possess killing machines, and political campaigns being funded by a gun advocacy group, makes our lawmakers the root of the problem.” says Change the Ref founder Manuel Oliver, whose son was among the 14 students murdered along with 3 staff members in the Parkland mass shooting. Mr. Oliver will deliver a statement at the press conference. “The questions and comments from some of the conservative justices during oral arguments before the Court were about abstract legal theory, not the tens of thousands of Americans killed every year by guns. On January 16, we will remind them of the cost in human lives that will be borne by our city and state if they side with the plaintiffs. We don’t want the US Supreme Court to turn Times Square into the OK Corral!” said GAG member Virginia Vitzthum.
