LGBTQ GUN CONTROL ACTIVISTS TO VISIT PHILADELPHIA GUN SHOW SATURDAY TO DISSEMINATE INFORMATION ABOUT FEMALE VICTIMS OF GUN VIOLENCE
NEW YORK, NY (July 21, 2017)—On Saturday, July 22, 2017, at approximately 12 p.m. Gays Against Guns (GAG) and fellow activists from the Women’s March will attend the Philadelphia Gun Show at the Philadelphia National Guard Armory to disseminate information about gun violence in the United States, particularly violence against women.
The gun control activists will arrive at the Philadelphia National Guard Armory (2700 Southampton Road) at approximately 12 p.m. to distribute flyers carrying information about the alarming rates of domestic abuse in the United States and how the presence of a gun dramatically increases risk of death. Some GAG members will be dressed completely in white, silently holding a placard with a description of female gun violence victims, while others will pass out flyers.
“We will be at the gun show to remind everyone of the tragic cost of the dearth of common sense gun control laws in the United States,” said GAG member Natalie James. “However, we will not enter into any arguments or foment any anger. We're only going to pass out flyers and speak to those people who'd like more information.”
The flyer contains statistics such as the following:
Each month approximately 50 women are shot to death by an intimate partner
The presence of guns in domestic violence situations increases the risk of homicide by 500%
38% fewer women are killed by partners in states that require comprehensive background checks for all handgun sales
“To my knowledge, no other gun violence prevention group has visited a gun show,” said GAG member Kevin Hertzog. “I'm proud that Gays Against Guns is engaging with the people who will be directly impacted by the decision to buy a gun, and I hope that we can give them information that changes the way they view that gun.”
Gays Against Guns NY is an inclusive direct action group of LGBTQ people and their allies committed to nonviolently breaking the gun industry's chain of death—investors, manufacturers, the NRA, and politicians who block strong gun laws. We are New York-based but work with GAG chapters in other cities to ensure safety for all individuals, particularly vulnerable communities such as people of color, women, people who struggle with mental health issues, LGBTQ people, and religious minorities.
