GAG's Orlando Chapter Takes on Ted Nugent | Orlando Political Observer | GAG In the News

The Orlando, Florida Chapter of Gays Against Guns took it to right wing gun nut and unhinged vocalist of "Cat Scratch Fever" Ted Nugent on July 14th during his performance at The Plaza Live.

Beyond his music career, Nugent is most widely known for his extreme right-wing views and famously:

"went on a vicious onstage rant in which he threatened the lives of Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Decked out in full-on camouflage hunting gear, Nugent wielded two machine guns while raging, 'Obama, he's a piece of shit. I told him to suck on my machine gun. Hey Hillary,' he continued. 'You might want to ride one of these into the sunset, you worthless bitch.'"  (Rolling Stone Magazine, August 24, 2007)

The protest was covered by the Orlando Political Observer in its article, "Ted Nugent Concert Draws Protesters", by Katherine Conroy.  The article observed that Nugent, a staunch gun rights supporter, "was performing at the venue that was the site where Christina Grimmie was shot and killed a little more than a year ago – the same weekend as the Pulse tragedy."

Ms. Grimmie was a 22-year-old contestant on "The Voice" and up-and-coming singer who was shot to death by a stalker after giving a concert at The Plaza Live on June 10, 2016.

The massacre at the PULSE Nightclub - only a few miles away from The Plaza Live - would occur only two days later.

Quoting Gays Against Guns: Orlando's press release, the article stated:

"Both of these tragedies were made possible by the lax attitude towards gun safety that Ted Nugent is virtually synonymous with. Providing concert space to a vocal opponent of equality and gun safety reform, and roughly one month past the one-year mark of a shooting at that venue, to boot is at best utterly insensitive and at worst actively enabling the systemic cycle of gun violence.”
