Horrifying Mass Shooting Anniversary Profiled by CBS Sunday Morning | Building Background Knowledge

The CBS weekly magazine series "CBS Sunday Morning" commemorated the 50th Anniversary of one of the first and most memorable mass shootings in American history.

The shooting, which occurred on August 1, 1966, took place at the University of Texas when Charles Joseph Whitman, a 25 year old former Marine and rifleman, ascended to the top of the campus's iconic clock tower and began shooting people below. Whitman had, earlier that day, already murdered his wife and mother.

Ultimately, 16 people would be killed and scores injured.
